Having used resin in the past as a material for finishing off imperfect timber in order to provide a smooth, flush finish without hiding the grain, I decided to explore the possibilities inherent in the material and how it could be coloured, poured and finished.
I had some simple MDF cubes from a previous project, into which I hand-cut a series of different sized circular holes in the top and sides. I then filled them with casting resin, dyed in a range of blue and orange tones.
These two cubes were my first pieces created using a combination of resin and MDF as an exploration of the casting and dyeing processes.

This first experiment was very instructive in determining the size and shape limitations of what casting resin can do as an artistic and design medium.
Lighting the cubes from within helped me to see the possibilities of the material in terms of clarity and depth of colour.
