inspiration
Originally intended as an extension of my resin table series, this piece became an exploration of shape, shade and surface.
process
This was intended as an experiment into how far I could push the resin casting technique, filling ever larger shapes outside of the familiar circles. As the piece evolved, however, it outgrew the possibilities of the resin.
The table became about the structure of the piece itself and the relationship between the base, the table top and the pattern cut into it.
I handcut a pattern of very precise arcs, which radiated out from the centre in a manner reminiscent of soundwaves resonating from a speaker.

The base flares outwards from underneath the top and finishes in line with edges of it.
I had originally painted it red, which was to be filled with orange resin discs.
Instead I decided to paint the table in semi-gloss black and very light grey. The absence of colour helps to highlight the form of the table and the intersecting curves and straight lines.
This piece has an unusual and dynamic form with a sort-of space-age feel.
