I engineered three U-shaped sections to create the platform surrounding the mattress which sits on two box sections for solidity and storage options. The one-piece headboard then bolted onto the end of the platform.
This meant that the bed could be assembled in sections but be totally squeak-free and present an almost seamless surface.
Fluorescent strip lighting was hidden inside each U-shaped section of the platform. The platform was mounted on four stainless steel legs to give the impression, when lit, that the bed is hovering in position, an effect that is heightened by the solidity and simplicity of its shape.

I chose 25mm MDF as the material to give it the necessary strength for marathon bonking sessions and the option of an endless range of colours in a semi-gloss water-based finish.
Inspiration - Need a bed - make a bed - make a bed that is the embodiment of everything you want in a bed.
I wanted the design to be simple, solid, beautiful and modern.

The matching bedside tables were made of a double layer of 32mm MDF that was then sanded and painted multiple times so that they appear to be carved from a solid block of material.

People often use words like ‘floating’ or ‘drifting when it comes to sleep and I think this bed certainly captures those feelings. I always put the lights on in the evening to create an inviting sanctuary.
The soft glow is very unobtrusive and relaxing but also gives the piece a strong presence.
