Stripe Juxtaposition - 1770mm x 1470mm

Stripes and White - 1390mm x 620mm

Two separate but complementary art pieces created using traditional Khmer headscarves
The headscarves laid out alongside the Check Control piece

Stripe Juxtaposition is made from 22 horizontal blocks of colour. Initially each side of the artwork seems to be made up of the same eleven elements in reverse order. To add visual intrigue and confusion through random uniformity, both the left and right sides of the piece have one unique colour.

Seeing these traditional Cambodian Krama headscarves in Phnom Penh was the starting point for my large scale Check Control artwork.

These two pieces were made from the striped ends of the scarfs and developed side by side. I wrapped the fabric around MDF blocks to give them solidity and form in identical sized rectangles.

Both artworks together before they were framed

Stripes and White is a calmer piece, using three colour combinations in three long vertical rows. The colours here are softer and more subdued, framed in white.

The frames of both pieces are intended to be integral with the artworks, which sit flush with the smooth painted surface.

Stripes and White is designed as a tall, vertical artwork

Together the two pieces have a balance of colour, shape and pattern that highlight the simple beauty of the material.
